Provenance

Where it came from

The Origin Spellbomb was released in 2010 as part of the Scars of Mirrodin set, the first installment in a block that returned players to the plane of Mirrodin. The card was designed as a cycle of inexpensive, colorless artifacts intended to provide utility to any deck by offering a cantrip effect and a specific keyword interaction—in this case, the creation of a Myr creature token.

The art was commissioned from illustrator Karl Kopinski, who depicted the device with the stark, metallic aesthetic characteristic of the Mirran faction's resistance against the invading Phyrexians. Upon its debut, the card was received as a functional role-player in Limited formats and casual artifact-themed decks, appreciated primarily for its ability to cycle through the library while maintaining board presence.
