Where it came from
Maestros Ascendancy was released as part of the Streets of New Capenna set in 2022, serving as a signature card for the Maestros faction, a crime syndicate within the art-deco inspired metropolis of New Capenna. The card was designed to mechanically reflect the faction’s philosophy of 'diabolic efficiency,' allowing players to sacrifice creatures to generate mana and utilize the graveyard, mirroring the syndicate's role as magically-inclined assassins.
The artwork for this promotional version was executed by artist Magali Villeneuve, who is celebrated for her evocative character work within the Magic: The Gathering universe. Her design captures the opulent, shadowy aesthetic of the Maestros, utilizing dark, luxurious tones and sharp, angular silhouettes to contrast the elegance of the city’s high society with the underlying ruthlessness of the organization.
