Where it came from
The Reservoir Kraken was introduced in the 2022 Magic: The Gathering set Streets of New Capenna. The card was designed to embody the art-deco aesthetic of the setting, which draws heavily from 1920s noir and mob-run industrial cities. The creature is depicted as a massive, tentacled entity emerging from the city’s complex infrastructure, emphasizing the urban horror themes central to the plane of New Capenna.
The artwork for this specific promo version was created to highlight the unique visual language of the set, utilizing a clean, stylized aesthetic that differs from standard printings. It was released through various promotional channels, such as Prerelease kits and store events, designed to encourage community engagement during the set's launch. The design choice aimed to capture the fluid, menacing nature of a kraken while integrating it into the claustrophobic, high-society environment of the game's setting.
