Where it came from
Mage Tower Referee was released in 2021 as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set, specifically within the supplemental Commander decks themed around the five magical colleges of the plane. The card was designed to mechanically reflect the flavor of Strixhaven's competitive magical sport, Mage Tower, by incentivizing fair play and punishing those who attempt to hoard resources or cast multiple spells in a single turn.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized the vibrant, academic aesthetic established for the Strixhaven setting. The design seeks to balance high-fantasy tropes with the structured, scholarly atmosphere of a wizarding university, and the card was received as a niche but effective utility tool for players looking to regulate the pacing of multiplayer Commander games.
