Provenance

Where it came from

Magmaw was released as part of the 2010 Magic: The Gathering set Rise of the Eldrazi. The set was designed to shift the game's focus toward massive, game-ending creatures and a high-mana economy, marking the climax of the multi-set Zendikar block. Magmaw was created to fit into the red color identity of the set, offering players a way to utilize surplus lands or creatures in the late game to deal direct damage to their opponents.

The card’s artwork was provided by Jason Chan, who depicted the elemental as a towering, magma-infused behemoth emerging from the volcanic landscapes of Zendikar. The design intent was to capture the destructive, chaotic nature of the plane's environment. Upon release, it was regarded as a functional utility creature that served its purpose well in Limited environments, though it saw less frequent play in more competitive Constructed formats.
