Where it came from
Magmaw was originally printed in the Scars of Mirrodin expansion in 2010, designed to highlight the set's central 'sacrifice' mechanical theme. It represents the brutal, corrupted landscape of Mirrodin as it was being transformed into New Phyrexia, a world of biomechanical horror. The card's design, which allows players to sacrifice lands to deal direct damage, was intended to give red decks a late-game utility option for flooding the board with damage at the expense of mana resources.
