Where it came from
Magnetic Mountain was originally released as part of the Revised Edition of Magic: The Gathering in 1994, serving as a reprint of a card that debuted in the game's initial Alpha and Beta sets the previous year. It was designed to function within the game's early color-pie architecture, specifically targeting the interaction between red magic and artifact-heavy strategies, a common theme in the game's infancy.
The artwork for this card was provided by Sandra Everingham, who contributed several illustrations to the early sets of the game. Her style reflects the distinct, somewhat surrealist aesthetic that defined the visual identity of Magic: The Gathering during its foundational era. While it was not a centerpiece of tournament play, it remains a notable example of the game's early design philosophy regarding niche sideboard interactions.
