Malevolent Hermit // Benevolent Geist

Malevolent Hermit // Benevolent Geist originated in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt, a gothic horror-themed expansion that revisited the plane of Innistrad. This card, specifically the promo version featuring unique borderless art, was released to coincide with the set's launch, providing players with a thematic take on the double-faced transformation mechanic central to the set's design. The card depicts the dual nature of an ascetic figure, capturing the eerie and transformative essence that defined the set's mechanical and aesthetic identity.

The artwork for this particular promo was crafted to emphasize the dramatic shift between the Hermit's shadowy, manipulative side and the protective, spectral benevolence of the Geist. By employing an extended art treatment, the illustrators sought to create a more immersive experience for players, moving away from traditional framing to showcase the gothic landscape and character details. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander and Eternal format communities, who valued its utility as a protective element that could be flipped to counter spells, marking it as a staple of the set's tactical landscape.
