Where it came from
Manaform Hellkite was introduced as part of the Secrets of Strixhaven Commander deck, released in 2021 as a tie-in to the Strixhaven: School of Mages set. The card was designed to support spell-heavy playstyles, rewarding players for casting instant and sorcery spells by creating temporary, powerful dragon tokens. This mechanic aligns with the set's thematic focus on the magical academic disciplines of the plane of Arcavios, specifically emphasizing the chaotic and explosive nature of red-aligned elemental magic.
The illustration by artist Julian Kok Joon Wen captures the essence of a creature birthed from magical energy. By utilizing vibrant, flowing colors and a sense of volatile movement, the artwork emphasizes the 'manaform' aspect of the dragon, suggesting it is a fleeting construct formed from the caster's own arcane resources. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the Commander community for its ability to provide consistent offensive pressure in decks that utilize high volumes of non-creature spells.
