Mardu Heart-Piercer

Mardu Heart-Piercer was first released in 2014 as part of the Duel Decks: Speed vs. Cunning set, a product line designed to provide players with two balanced, ready-to-play decks representing competing philosophies of combat. The card served as a thematic centerpiece for the Mardu Horde, a warrior clan from the Tarkir block characterized by their aggression and rapid military expansion. Mechanically, the card was built around the 'Raid' keyword, which incentivized players to attack early and often to trigger powerful combat-related effects.

The card's illustration was created by artist Mathias Kollros, who captured the fierce aesthetic of the Mardu clan through the depiction of a heavily armored orc archer. The design sought to visually embody the high-speed, high-impact nature of the set's red-aligned strategy. Upon its debut, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in limited formats, where its ability to deal direct damage upon entering the battlefield provided a versatile tool for removing smaller creatures or pressuring an opponent's life total.
