Where it came from
Mardu Heart-Piercer was originally printed in the Khans of Tarkir expansion in 2014, designed to represent the aggressive, raiding philosophy of the Mardu Horde clan. The card features the 'raid' mechanic, which rewards players for attacking before casting the spell, reflecting the clan's lore as nomadic, fast-moving warriors who emphasize overwhelming force and decisive strikes.
The Jumpstart 2022 version, numbered 572, retains the original illustration by Volkan Baga. Baga, a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering, utilized a bold, action-oriented style to depict the archer in mid-draw, capturing the intensity of the battlefield. The inclusion of this card in the Jumpstart 2022 set was intended to provide players with a cohesive, thematic experience in a format designed for quick, randomized deck-building.
