Provenance

Where it came from

Marsh Gas was originally introduced in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, representing the game's initial exploration of swamp-themed damage spells. As a common instant, it was designed to provide black mana players with a simple, flavor-aligned way to deal direct damage to creatures or players based on the number of swamps controlled, reflecting the environmental hazards of the game's gothic fantasy setting.

The artwork for this Fourth Edition printing was provided by Douglas Shuler, one of the game's original contributing artists. Shuler's design focuses on the eerie, ethereal nature of gas rising from a bog, utilizing a somber color palette that became a hallmark of early black-aligned cards. While the card was a staple of early limited play, it eventually faded from competitive relevance as the game's mechanics evolved toward more efficient board interaction.
