Where it came from
Martyr of Frost was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was designed as a thematic successor to the 1995 Ice Age block, drawing on cold-weather mechanics and a harsh, wintry aesthetic. The card reflects the set's focus on snow-covered lands and creatures that draw power from the frozen environment.
The card was illustrated by Greg Staples, who utilized a stark, high-contrast style to depict the martyr's icy, ethereal form. In gameplay, the card was received as a versatile utility piece for control decks, offering a way to counter spells by sacrificing snow permanents. Its design remains a notable example of how the game incorporates thematic environmental limitations into mechanical balance.
