Martyr of Sands

Martyr of Sands was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was unique for its design philosophy, as it was intentionally developed as the long-lost third expansion of the 1988 Ice Age block, completing a thematic trilogy that had remained unfinished for over a decade. The card itself reflects the snowy, survivalist aesthetic of the set, emphasizing themes of isolation and religious sacrifice in a frozen landscape.

The card was illustrated by Rebecca Guay, an artist widely admired in the Magic community for her ethereal, watercolor-based style. In this piece, she aimed to capture the somber, ascetic nature of the martyr, moving away from typical aggressive combat imagery to focus on a more melancholic and spiritual tone. Upon its release, the card became a staple in white-based control and life-gain strategies, particularly in the Modern format, where its ability to rapidly increase a player's life total proved to be a highly efficient defensive tool.
