Mask of Memory

Mask of Memory was originally released in the 2003 Mirrodin expansion, marking its introduction into the Magic: The Gathering universe as an artifact equipment card. It was designed to synergize with aggressive, evasive creatures, rewarding players for successfully dealing combat damage by offering both card advantage and library manipulation. Its inclusion in the 2020 Commander Legends set served to make this staple utility card more accessible to the growing Commander format community, retaining its original mechanical identity while featuring updated card frame aesthetics suited for modern play.

The art for the original card was created by Greg Staples, who rendered the mask with a haunting, metallic aesthetic that reflects the scavenging and transformative nature of the Mirrodin plane. The design focus was on balancing the power of looting—drawing and discarding cards—against the requirement of landing a direct hit on an opponent. It has since become a fixture in casual and competitive formats alike, lauded by players for its efficiency and its ability to turn even modest creatures into significant strategic assets.
