Where it came from
Mask of the Schemer was released as part of the New Capenna Commander set in 2022. It serves as an artifact equipment card that mirrors the high-stakes, noir-inspired themes of the plane of New Capenna, a city defined by its syndicate-run criminal underworld, art deco aesthetics, and internal power struggles.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Volkan Baga, who utilized a moody, opulent visual style to reflect the item's role as a tool for deceit and strategic advantage. The design emphasizes the 'schemer' archetype present throughout the set, and upon release, the card was noted by players for its utility in decks focused on graveyard recursion and card selection.
