Where it came from
Bess, Soul Nourisher was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, specifically appearing in the promo slot for the Cabaretti Cacophony deck. The character represents the leader of the Cabaretti, a faction within the Art Deco-inspired metropolis of New Capenna that prioritizes hedonism, community, and social influence. Mechanically, the card was designed to embody the communal nature of the Cabaretti by scaling its power based on the presence of smaller creatures, reinforcing the faction's thematic focus on strength through numbers.
The card's artwork, illustrated by Wisnu Tan, captures the vibrant, opulent aesthetic synonymous with the New Capenna expansion. Drawing heavy inspiration from the Roaring Twenties, the design utilizes rich colors and elegant attire to depict Bess as a charismatic figurehead. Within the game, the card was well-received by commander players for its unique ability to reward token-based strategies, making it a distinct inclusion in the set that bridges the gap between thematic flavor and competitive utility.
