Provenance

Where it came from

Mass Mutiny was originally released as a signature card in the 2012 Planechase expansion, appearing as part of the 'Chaos Reigns' deck. It was designed during a period when Wizards of the Coast was looking to expand the multiplayer format, introducing the chaotic, shifting environment of the planes to tabletop play. The card's mechanics were specifically tailored to the social, unpredictable nature of four-player free-for-all games.

The card features artwork by Kev Walker, a prominent illustrator known for his gritty, high-contrast style that defined much of the aesthetic for that era of the game. The design intent was to capture the flavor of a sudden political shift in an ongoing conflict, forcing players to redistribute board control. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of Commander and casual multiplayer formats for its ability to drastically alter the momentum of a game in a single turn.
