Mass Manipulation was released in early 2019 as part of the Ravnica Allegiance expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a high-mana cost sorcery meant to serve as a late-game swing card, allowing players to seize control of multiple creatures or planeswalkers simultaneously. This effect was tailored to reflect the political intrigue and factional power struggles central to the Ravnica setting, where the blue-aligned guilds often employ complex magical coercion to turn an opponent's resources against them.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Anthony Palumbo, whose style frequently incorporates atmospheric lighting and intricate, painterly textures. In this piece, Palumbo visualizes the concept of mental subjugation through swirling, ethereal energy that binds figures to the will of the caster.
