Master of Cruelties

Master of Cruelties was originally introduced in the Dragon's Maze expansion in 2013, designed to embody the lethal, sadistic nature of the Rakdos Cult within the Ravnica plane. The card’s design, featuring a triggered ability that reduces an opponent's life total to one, was intended to create high-tension gameplay moments that force opponents to manage their defenses carefully. Its inclusion in the RNA Guild Kit, a product specifically themed around the guilds of Ravnica, served to reintroduce this iconic creature to a new generation of players looking to explore the mechanics of the black-red color identity.

The artwork for the card, illustrated by Jason Felix, leans heavily into the chaotic and macabre aesthetic of the Rakdos. Felix utilized a stark, high-contrast composition to emphasize the creature's menacing presence, aiming to visually represent the thin line between life and death that the card dictates. Upon its release, the card gained a reputation as a 'build-around' threat in Commander formats, where its unique ability to bypass traditional combat math made it a polarizing and memorable addition to many black-red decks.
