Where it came from
Master of Dark Rites was released as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander set in late 2023. As a reprint from the Magic: The Gathering Commander product line, it serves as a specialized card designed to support themes of graveyard interaction and black mana ramp within multiplayer formats. The card is a functional reprint of the classic card Dark Ritual, reimagined here with thematic art to better fit the Mesoamerican-inspired, subterranean adventure aesthetic of the Ixalan plane.
The card features artwork by artist Jason A. Engle, whose work frequently appears throughout modern Magic sets. Engle's design for this version emphasizes the dark, ritualistic atmosphere central to the black color identity, utilizing the visual motifs of the Ixalan vampires and their reverence for blood rites. Upon its release, the card was received primarily as a utility piece for Commander players seeking a thematic variant of an essential, high-power staple card.
