What it does
When this creature enters, surveil 2. (Look at the top two cards of your library, then put any number of them into your graveyard and the rest on top of your library in any order.)
At the beginning of your upkeep, if this card is in your graveyard, you may pay 1 life. If you do, return it to your hand.
Coming back from the dead, like most things, gets easier with practice.

Where it came from
Master of Death was released in 2021 as part of the Modern Horizons 2 set, a supplemental Magic: The Gathering expansion specifically designed to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format. The card was created to provide a repeatable recursion effect for black and blue decks, drawing inspiration from the flavor of the Grixis shard and the recurring cycle of life and death that defines the plane of Grixis in the game's lore.
The card features artwork by illustrator Volkan Baga, who utilized a dark, atmospheric palette to emphasize the character's spectral nature. Baga’s design captures the essence of a lingering spirit tied to the mortal coil, aiming for a visual style that balances gothic horror with the high-fantasy aesthetic typical of the set. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its tactical versatility and synergy with discard-focused strategies, quickly becoming a staple in various graveyard-based archetypes.
