Masticore

The Masticore was originally released in the 1999 Urza's Destiny expansion, where it quickly became one of the most feared creatures in competitive Magic: The Gathering due to its ability to clear the board and regenerate. The version included in the 2000 World Championship Decks was a gold-bordered reprint of the card used in Jon Finkel's winning deck list from the 2000 World Championship. These decks were produced by Wizards of the Coast as a way to provide players with a faithful recreation of the tournament-winning strategies used by the world's best players.

The card's design features the artwork of Carl Critchlow, whose distinct, gritty style helped define the aesthetic of the late nineties era of the game. The Masticore itself is depicted as a metallic, lion-like construct, reflecting the artificial and mechanical themes prevalent in the Urza block. While the World Championship versions are not legal for standard tournament play, they have become significant historical artifacts for collectors who wish to preserve the specific deck configurations that shaped the game's competitive history at the turn of the millennium.
