Provenance

Where it came from

The Masticore card from the 2000 World Championship Decks was issued as a direct inclusion in the deck piloted by Jon Finkel, who secured his first World Championship title in Yokohama that year. These decks were printed by Wizards of the Coast as commemorative products, designed to replicate the exact 75-card tournament lists used by the top players, complete with gold-bordered backs and facsimile signatures to distinguish them from standard tournament-legal cards.

The original Masticore card, first appearing in the Urza's Destiny expansion, was illustrated by Brom and is widely regarded as one of the most powerful artifacts in the history of the Magic: The Gathering card game. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, the creature's high efficiency and versatility made it a staple of competitive play. By featuring it in the 2000 World Championship release, Wizards of the Coast allowed enthusiasts to study and play with the sophisticated control strategies that defined the competitive meta of that era.
