Where it came from
Matter Reshaper was first released as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion in early 2016, a set designed to advance the narrative of the Zendikar block where the iconic Planeswalkers formed the Gatewatch to combat the Eldrazi titans. As a colorless creature with a pseudo-card-advantage ability, it was crafted to bridge the gap between artifact-focused mechanics and the Eldrazi's distinct thematic identity, emphasizing the strange, reality-warping nature of these cosmic entities.
The artwork for this specific promotional version was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who captured the alien, amorphous aesthetic inherent to the Eldrazi brood. By depicting the creature mid-shift, Rainville highlighted the card’s mechanical intent—replacing itself upon death—while providing a sleek, modern visual update. The card was well-received by players for its efficiency in mid-range strategies and remains a staple of the Eldrazi tribal archetype due to its unique combination of body and card-cycling utility.
