Where it came from
Matter Reshaper was released in 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch set, the second expansion in the Battle for Zendikar block. The card reflects the set's central conflict, where the Eldrazi—an ancient, reality-warping alien force—threatened to consume the plane of Zendikar. Mechanically, the card was designed to embody the unpredictable and shifting nature of the Eldrazi, utilizing the colorless mana requirement introduced in this block to highlight the creature's otherworldly essence.
The art for Matter Reshaper was created by Jaime Jones, who sought to capture the unsettling, non-Euclidean anatomy typical of the Eldrazi aesthetic. By depicting the creature as a swirling, incomplete entity, the illustration reinforces the card's theme of reshaping matter and reality. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficient, value-oriented design, becoming a staple in competitive formats like Modern, where its triggered ability often provided a significant advantage by allowing players to cheat additional permanents onto the battlefield.
