Where it came from
Matzalantli, the Great Door is a legendary land card introduced in the 2023 Magic: The Gathering set, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. It was designed to capture the Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetic of the plane, depicting an ancient, sealed gateway tied to the expansion's themes of exploration and subterranean mysteries. The card functions as a transform mechanic, representing the discovery of a powerful, long-hidden core once the conditions of the entrance are met.
The card was illustrated by artist Wisnu Tan, who utilized a vivid color palette and intricate stone-carving details to convey a sense of immense history and ritualistic importance. Upon its release, the card drew significant interest from players focusing on graveyard-recursion strategies, as its ability to fill the graveyard and subsequently generate mana allowed for robust endgame plays. It remains a staple in casual Commander formats for its utility and thematic resonance within the Ixalan narrative.
