Where it came from
Matzalantli, the Great Door is a double-faced legendary land card released in the 2023 Magic: The Gathering set, The Lost Caverns of Ixalan. It was designed to anchor the set's exploration of Mesoamerican-inspired subterranean civilizations, functioning as a transforming card that reflects the narrative discovery of ancient, powerful gateways hidden beneath the surface of the plane of Ixalan.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Caio Monteiro, who focused on the interplay between deep-earth bioluminescence and ancient stone masonry to convey a sense of forbidden scale. The design was received as a complex engine for graveyard-focused strategies, praised by players for its technical synergy and its ability to act as a significant mana-producing resource once flipped into The Core.
