Meddling Mage

Meddling Mage was originally designed by Chris Pikula to commemorate his victory in the 2000 Magic: The Gathering Invitational. As part of the tournament tradition, the winner was granted the opportunity to design a card that would be added to the game, resulting in a unique creature that allows a player to name a non-land card and prevent their opponent from casting it. The design intentionally rewarded deep metagame knowledge and proactive play, cementing its status as a staple in competitive control and tempo decks.

The Double Masters printing features new, evocative artwork by Todd Lockwood, who reimagined the character with a more fluid, mystical aesthetic compared to the original design. This version of the card was released in 2020 as part of a premium set focused on high-powered reprints, aimed at players looking to enhance their collections with visually distinct versions of iconic tournament cards. The reception among the player base has remained consistently positive, as it retains the card's original strategic utility while offering a fresh, elevated visual presentation for the modern era of the game.
