Where it came from
Force of Will was originally printed in the 1996 Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a safety valve for the game's high-power environments, it allowed players to counter spells without spending mana by exiling a blue card from their hand and paying one life. This design choice fundamentally shifted competitive play, establishing itself as the quintessential control tool in eternal formats.
The Double Masters 51 printing features updated, high-definition artwork by Terese Nielsen, who revisited the iconic motif for this reprint. Released in 2020, this version was intended to make a highly sought-after competitive staple more accessible to players while showcasing modernized aesthetics. It was well-received by the community for balancing utility with the elevated artistic standards common to the Masters series.
