What it does

Destroy target land. Melt Terrain deals 2 damage to that land's controller.

Just as the most finely wrought metal can warp and rust, so too does Mirrodin buckle under pressures from without and within.

Provenance

Where it came from

Melt Terrain was released in 2010 as part of the Scars of Mirrodin set, the return to the metallic plane of Mirrodin after the original 2003 block. The card reflects the set's central narrative conflict, where the insidious, oil-based Phyrexian faction begins to corrupt the native landscape, turning natural terrain into twisted, industrial artifice.

The artwork was commissioned from John Avon, one of the most prolific and recognizable landscape illustrators in the history of Magic: The Gathering. Avon utilized his signature ability to render ethereal lighting and expansive horizons to depict the visceral transformation of the land, emphasizing the high-fantasy aesthetic that defined the set's visual transition from a pristine metal world to a decaying, infected ecosystem.
