Where it came from
The Rust Tick was released in 2010 as part of the Scars of Mirrodin set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It was designed to reflect the set's central conflict between the metallic, artificial inhabitants of the plane of Mirrodin and the encroaching, organic corruption of the Phyrexians, serving as a tactical artifact creature that could manipulate the state of other artifacts.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Christopher Moeller, who captured the insectoid, utilitarian aesthetic common to the Mirran resistance. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional utility piece for limited formats, valued for its ability to tap down opposing machines and delay an opponent's momentum during the early stages of a game.
