Where it came from
Merchant of Secrets was originally printed as a common in the 2017 Commander set, a collection of preconstructed decks released by Wizards of the Coast designed specifically for the multiplayer Commander format. This card serves as a functional utility piece within the blue color identity, providing both a creature body and card advantage upon entry to the battlefield. It reflects the design philosophy of mid-2010s supplemental products, which often utilized established mechanical staples to balance the power levels of ready-to-play decks.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the history of Magic: The Gathering. His depiction of the merchant reflects a classic high-fantasy aesthetic that defined much of the game's early visual language. While the card is a humble entry in the expansive library of Magic cards, its inclusion in the Commander 2017 product suite helped bridge the gap between legacy card availability and the rising popularity of the Commander format at the time.
