Where it came from
Mercenary Knight was released in 1997 as part of the Portal: Three Kingdoms set, which was designed specifically for the Asian market to introduce players to the mechanics of Magic: The Gathering. Unlike the standard sets released at the time, Portal utilized a simplified rule set intended to lower the barrier of entry for new players, removing complex mechanics like instant-speed spells to streamline gameplay.
The card features an illustration by Pete Venters, a prominent artist who contributed extensively to the game during the late 1990s. The visual style reflects the set's thematic commitment to the historical and legendary figures of the Three Kingdoms period in Chinese history, aiming to capture the aesthetic of ancient warfare and tactical combat that defined the source material.
