Merchant Raiders

Merchant Raiders was released as part of the Commander Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2020. This set was notable for being the first designed specifically for the Commander format, which emphasizes multiplayer games and unique deck-building constraints. The card was created to provide blue-aligned players with an interactive combat mechanic that forces creatures into precarious positions, reflecting the strategic trickery often associated with the game's pirate-themed cards.

The card features artwork by illustrator Zezhou Chen, who captured the chaotic, tactical essence of a seafaring ambush. The design team focused on the 'goad' mechanic, a keyword that forces opponents to attack, thereby disrupting their defensive strategies. Upon its release, it was well-received by players looking to add political tension and complex combat dynamics to their commander decks, cementing its place as a staple utility piece for blue-red-based maritime themes.
