Where it came from
The Merchant Scroll, released as part of the 2018 Judge Gift card series, was produced by Wizards of the Coast as a reward for Magic: The Gathering judges. These items serve as a token of appreciation for the community members who oversee tournaments and ensure the integrity of competitive play. The card reflects the unique aesthetic of the Judge Gift program, which often highlights existing staples with exclusive, premium foil treatments that distinguish them from standard set printings.
The illustration was crafted by artist Volkan Baga, whose work frequently appears in the Magic: The Gathering card game. Baga’s design for the Merchant Scroll captures a scholarly, mystical atmosphere suitable for a blue-aligned sorcery spell. Upon its release, the card was well-received by collectors for its polished visual presentation and the high quality of the foiling process typical of the late-2010s promotional releases, remaining a prized piece for those who curate collections of judge-exclusive rewards.
