Merchant Scroll

Merchant Scroll was originally printed in the 1999 expansion set Portal Three Kingdoms, designed to introduce players to the themes and aesthetics of the historical Chinese epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The card features artwork by the veteran illustrator Liz Danforth, whose approach sought to capture a classic, ethereal ink-wash sensibility fitting the literary source material. While Portal Three Kingdoms was initially limited in its release to the Asian market, the card's mechanical utility as a powerful tutor effect eventually secured its place as a staple in various constructed formats.

The inclusion of Merchant Scroll in Mystery Booster 2 serves as a nod to the game's expansive history and the enduring popularity of unique, utility-focused cards from the Portal era. This printing retains the original evocative art style while updating the card frame to modern design standards. It is presented in this set as a curated selection intended to evoke nostalgia for older play environments while offering players a functional tool that remains highly relevant in contemporary deck-building.
