Provenance

Where it came from

Mercy Killing was originally printed as a rare card in the 2008 Magic: The Gathering expansion Shadowmoor. The set was designed to explore themes of light and shadow, leaning heavily into a dark, gothic fairy-tale aesthetic. Mechanically, the card was intended to provide a high-variance, black-aligned removal spell that scaled with the size of the target, reflecting the set's focus on creature-type synergy and tribal mechanics.

The artwork for the card was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, who captured a grim and ethereal moment consistent with the Shadowmoor plane's unsettling atmosphere. The card was later included in 'The List,' a rotating collection of past Magic cards featured in Set Boosters starting in 2020. This initiative was designed by Wizards of the Coast to bring older, mechanically interesting, or flavorful cards back into the hands of contemporary players, allowing them to appear in modern booster pack openings.
