Where it came from
Merfolk Falconer was released in 2020 as part of the Zendikar Rising expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to support the set's party mechanic, a thematic inclusion that rewarded players for assembling a team consisting of a cleric, rogue, warrior, and wizard. By providing a flying creature with a relevant keyword ability, the card was intended to function as a versatile mid-tier pick for players drafting limited environments or building tribal-focused decks.
The artwork was illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, a frequent contributor to the game known for his dynamic character portraits. For this piece, Kieryluk focused on the aquatic aesthetic of the Zendikar Merfolk, emphasizing the fluid movement and specialized gear of the Falconer. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, utility-focused uncommon that solidified the blue-white party archetype, valued primarily for its efficiency rather than as a centerpiece of competitive play.
