Where it came from
Zagras, Thief of Heartbeats was released in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Zendikar Rising. Designed as a legendary creature for the Commander format, the card reflects the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Zendikar plane, a world characterized by treacherous landscapes and powerful mana-infused magic. The character represents the dangerous creatures known as vampires, which in this setting are depicted as regal yet predatory beings aligned with the color black and red magic.
The artwork for Zagras was illustrated by Greg Rutkowski, a prominent artist within the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem known for his dramatic lighting and atmospheric fantasy compositions. Rutkowski emphasized the creature's menacing nature by contrasting the character's jagged armor and wings against a turbulent, dark background. Upon release, the card was received as a strong aggressive option for players focusing on combat-oriented strategies, particularly due to its ability to grant deathtouch and haste to other creatures in play.
