Where it came from
Merfolk Observer was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set marked the conclusion of the Zendikar block, a pivotal storyline where the plane of Zendikar—a world defined by its volatile, life-giving mana—was overrun by the ancient, world-eating Eldrazi titans. As a common card, the Observer served to flesh out the world-building, depicting the merfolk inhabitants of Zendikar as they confronted the sudden, terrifying emergence of the Eldrazi menace.
The card features artwork by illustrator Volkan Baga, who was tasked with visualizing the merfolk’s role as scouts during this planar apocalypse. Baga’s design captures the characteristic lithe, aquatic aesthetic of Zendikar’s merfolk, emphasizing their traditional role as observers and scholars while incorporating the looming, otherworldly dread of the Eldrazi influence. The piece was well-received by players for its atmospheric consistency with the set's high-stakes narrative and its functional contribution to the game’s mechanics during the draft-heavy environment of the block.
