Provenance

Where it came from

Merfolk of the Pearl Trident was released in 1997 as part of Portal, an introductory set designed by Wizards of the Coast to lower the barrier to entry for new Magic: The Gathering players. The set utilized simplified mechanics and portal-themed card borders to distinguish it from the standard competitive expansions of the era. It was intended to function as a standalone teaching tool, focusing on basic creature combat and direct gameplay.

The artwork for this card was created by illustrators who contributed to the early aesthetic of the game, emphasizing the classic high-fantasy depiction of merfolk warriors. In the context of the Portal set, the card served as a foundational blue-aligned creature. While simple in its execution, it remains a nostalgic artifact for players who entered the hobby during the late 1990s, representing a shift toward more accessible game design.
