Where it came from
Merfolk Pupil was released in 2022 as part of the Jumpstart 2022 set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to create a fast-paced, accessible limited play experience, allowing players to shuffle two packs together to form a functional deck. The inclusion of Merfolk cards follows a long-standing tradition in the game where Merfolk serve as a core blue-aligned creature type, often emphasizing card manipulation, library interaction, and synergy-based strategies.
The card features artwork by illustrator Zezhou Chen, who brings a vibrant, contemporary digital style to the piece. The design aims to capture the essence of a scholarly Merfolk practitioner in an underwater library setting, focusing on the character's focused expression and the arcane knowledge surrounding them. The card serves as a functional 'looting' creature, a common design trope in blue Magic cards intended to help players filter their hands during the early stages of a game.
