Where it came from
Merfolk Raiders was released in 1996 as part of the Mirage expansion, the first set in a block that emphasized a tropical, adventure-themed aesthetic. It was designed to provide a low-cost, aggressive creature for blue decks, a color identity typically focused on control and reaction rather than direct battlefield presence. The card's design reflects the set's shift toward creatures that interact with the combat phase in unconventional ways, emphasizing the theme of aquatic exploration and conflict.
The card features artwork by Susan Van Camp, a prolific illustrator for early Magic: The Gathering. Her work on this card aims to capture the sleek, predatory nature of the merfolk within the lush, vibrant environment of Jamuraa. While not considered a high-value collectible today, the card remains a notable example of the artistic consistency found in the Mirage set, which is often praised by long-term players for its cohesive world-building and distinct thematic art direction.
