Where it came from
Merfolk Skydiver was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set War of the Spark. The card was designed to support the set's proliferate mechanic, a core theme that allowed players to add counters to creatures and planeswalkers already on the battlefield. It fits into the Simic (green and blue) color identity, reflecting the faction's focus on evolutionary biology and rapid growth within the Ravnica city-plane narrative.
The illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who depicted the Merfolk in a dynamic, high-altitude pose consistent with the card's flying ability and aerial theme. The design was received as a functional staple for Limited play formats, where its ability to trigger proliferate upon entering the battlefield provided significant tactical versatility in a set heavily saturated with planeswalker cards.
