Where it came from
Merieke Ri Berit was released in 1995 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Ice Age. The set marked a shift in the game's development, moving away from the high-fantasy themes of earlier releases to embrace a colder, more isolated aesthetic centered on a world trapped in a perpetual glacial epoch. As one of the legendary creatures in the set, Merieke was designed to represent the powerful, often morally ambiguous figures who emerged to command factions within this harsh environment.
The card was illustrated by Quinton Hoover, a prolific artist whose contribution to the early years of the game was defined by a distinct, ink-heavy style that prioritized dramatic composition. Hoover’s design for Merieke features the character in a commanding, slightly ethereal pose, emphasizing her unique mechanical ability to control other creatures. The card was well-received by players for its tactical complexity and remains a classic example of early-mid 90s fantasy card art.
