Provenance

Where it came from

The Merrow Levitator was released in 2008 as part of the Eventide expansion for Magic: The Gathering, the second set in the Shadowmoor block. The set explored a world undergoing a mystical transition from a twilight state into a harsh, eternal night, which heavily influenced the aesthetic of the cards. The Merrow, a race of merfolk endemic to the plane of Lorwyn-Shadowmoor, were reimagined for this set with more ominous, survivalist traits to match the darkening environment.

The illustration was crafted by artist Warren Mahy, who captured the aquatic creature utilizing its telekinetic abilities to hover above the water. The design aimed to translate the flavor of the Merrow's fluid nature into a mechanical utility card that allowed players to exert control over the battlefield. Upon its release, the card was noted by players for its niche utility within tribal merfolk decks, serving as a flavorful, if modest, addition to the competitive landscape of the time.
