Where it came from
The Metallic Mimic was released in early 2017 as part of the Aether Revolt set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set on the plane of Kaladesh, a world defined by its obsession with invention and magical energy known as Aether, the card represents the shift toward autonomous artifact creatures designed to serve the city's inhabitants. It serves as a mechanical utility piece that functions as a shapeshifting troop builder, intended to bolster tribal synergies across various competitive formats.
The artwork was illustrated by Jason Rainville, who captured the creature's fluid, modular aesthetic to emphasize its identity as a mimic. The design sought to balance the card's simple, versatile ability with a visual language that felt grounded in the intricate, brass-and-copper steampunk style of Kaladesh. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency, becoming a staple in decks that rely on consistent creature types.
