Where it came from
The Metalhead action figure was released in 1990 as part of the initial wave of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line produced by Playmates Toys. Designed as a robotic doppelgänger of the turtles, the character was introduced in the original animated series as a creation of the villain Krang to infiltrate and defeat the heroes. The toy captured the unique aesthetic of the 1980s era, featuring chrome-like vacuum-metallized plastic parts that gave it a distinct, shiny appearance compared to the standard, matte-finished figures in the set.
The design focused on capturing the clunky, mechanical nature of the on-screen character, complete with oversized metallic limbs and a stylized robotic head. While the figure was praised by fans for its ambitious use of metallic finishes, the chrome coating proved notoriously fragile, often flaking or wearing away with repeated play. Despite this, Metalhead remains a hallmark of the Playmates era, remembered for its clever integration of the show's lore into a tangible, collectible form that stood out on retail shelves.
