Where it came from
Mezzio Mugger was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, a collection themed around the Art Deco-inspired, mob-controlled metropolis of New Capenna. This set marked a stylistic departure for Magic: The Gathering, leaning heavily into a 1920s noir aesthetic characterized by organized crime syndicates, lavish parties, and a gritty urban atmosphere.
The artwork for the card was created by illustrator Matt Stewart, who focused on the aggressive, opportunist nature of the creature within the setting. By depicting the mugger as a menacing figure navigating the crowded, shadowed alleys of the city, Stewart captured the high-stakes tension inherent in the set's faction-based gameplay. It was received by the player community as a thematic representation of the world's cutthroat labor and criminal underbelly.
